Theresa Sherry tied a career high with five goals, including two early in the second half that gave the Tigers a five-goal lead, as the top-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team won its 12th straight game by defeating No. 9 Virginia, 12-9, in a game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Sherry, whose overtime goal defeated the Cavaliers in last season's national championship game gave Princeton its second straight national title, made sure Sunday's finish wouldn't be nearly as exciting, scoring twice in the first half as the Tigers (3-0) took a 7-4 halftime lead and putting Princeton ahead 12-6 with 9:19 left after her fifth goal.
"I just tried to take advantage of the opportunities given to me today," said Sherry, who now has 11 goals in three games this season. "We have a lot of people you have to pay attention to as far as scoring and I was able to finish shots today." Virginia (4-2), which had defeated No. 3 Maryland earlier last week, was led by Amy Appelt's three goals and two assists. The Cavaliers tied the game at four with 6:33 left in the first half on Appelt's second goal, but Princeton scored the final three goals of the first half, including Lindsey Biles' goal off a nice pass from Sherry with just nine seconds on the clock.
"It was key that we were able to play so well at the end of the half and get some momentum," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "We really did a nice job controlling the game after that until the last few minutes."
Virginia came as close as 8-5 early in the second half after Kim Connors scored at the 26:50 mark, but Sherry's two goals put Princeton ahead 10-5 just five minutes later.
Freshman Kathleen Miller, Biles, and senior Tara Hardiman each added two goals for Princeton, which outshot the Cavaliers 32-19, including 20-6 in the first half. Virginia's Andrea Pfeiffer had 13 saves, including nine in the first half, to help keep the Cavaliers within striking distance early on.
Connors had two goals for Virginia, while Caitlin Banks had a goal and two assists.
Princeton won 15 of the game's 23 draws, controlling possession early on despite not leading until midway through the first half. The teams alternated goals in the first 15 minutes, with Hardiman's first goal tying the game at 3-3 at the 14:41 mark.
Princeton goalie Sarah Kolodner had seven of her nine saves in the second half for Princeton, whose 12-game winning streak is the program's third longest all-time behind 2002's 19-game streak and 1994's 14-game streak.
The Tigers, sure to be ranked No. 1 again when Monday's poll is released, face No. 2 Duke in the matchup of the early season in women's lacrosse Wednesday night at Class of 1952 Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m., and the game can be heard live at goprincetontigers.com.
