NEW YORK - Lindsey Biles and Theresa Sherry each scored three goals as the top-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team took an 11-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 17-6 victory over Columbia in the Ivy League opener for both teams at Baker Field Wednesday night.
The Tigers (6-0), who won their 15th straight game dating back to last season, outshot Columbia 25-2 in the first half and took a 7-0 lead less than 13 minutes into the game. Biles then scored three goals in the final eight minutes of the half, including one with less than two minutes remaining, to give Princeton the 11-0 halftime lead. The Tigers then rested their starters in the second half.
Princeton would make it 12-0 on Jamie Sundheim's goal early in the second half before the Lions (5-2) finally got on the board with just over 18 minutes left in the game. Freshmen Alex Gangler, Caitlin Reimers and Mary Minshall would later score goals midway through the second half to give the Tigers a 15-2 advantage. Kate Lombard and Adie Moll would each score two goals for Columbia, which also got 10 saves from Marcela Calidonio. The Lions had just nine shots for the game compared to 35 for Princeton.
11 different Princeton players scored at least one goal, and Pillion and Minshall each scored twice. The Tigers scored at least 17 goals against Columbia for the seventh straight year and have outscored the Lions 118-14 in those seven wins.
Sarah Kolodner played the first half for Princeton and did not allow a goal, while freshman Colleen O'Boyle in goal and had one save. Every Princeton player saw action in the game, with sophomore Olachi Opara scoring her first goal of the season in the second half to go along with the first career goals for Gangler and Reimers.
Princeton won 15 of the game's 24 draw controls, including three each from Biles and Pillion, and had 19 groundballs to just 13 for the Lions. Columbia's 5-1 start was the best since the school established the varsity lacrosse program in 1997.
The Tigers' 15-game winning streak is now the second-longest in team history behind a 20-game streak that spanned the final 19 games of the 2002 season and the first game of last season. Princeton hasn't lost since falling at Yale last April.
Princeton puts its No. 1 ranking on the line Friday afternoon, taking on undefeated and No. 2 Georgetown in Washington, D.C., at 4 p.m., in the game of the early season in women's college lacrosse.
