The Princeton women's lacrosse team wasn't going to let a little bad weather get in the way of a big streak that keeps on getting bigger.
And after the Tigers had fought through the rain and wind to take a 6-0 lead and coast to a 10-3 victory over Penn at Class of 1952 Stadium Wednesday night, Princeton had more than just a big winning streak. Their 21st straight win was also a program record.
"We don't talk about it like fans or the media, but sure, we take a lot of pride in winning that many games in a row," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "We just try to prepare as well as we can for every game, and it's been a successful formula."
Despite the rain and win that made conditions difficult for both teams, Wednesday's game, like many Tiger games in 2004, wasn't in doubt after the first few minutes. Princeton (12-0, 4-0 Ivy) scored three times in the first seven minutes of the game to take a 3-0 lead and force a Penn timeout, and the Tigers would make it 6-0 later in the half on the second of consecutive goals by freshman Kathleen Miller. When Theresa Sherry scored for the Tigers with just under three minutes left in the half, the Tigers had taken a 7-1 lead. "Tonight was probably Kathleen's best all-around game of the season," said Sailer, whose team has also won 27 of its last 28 games dating back to last season. "She did a great job both offensively and defensively, and she's really learning when to take the ball to the goal and when to pull it out."
Princeton also got four goals from Sherry, who passed both Kim Smith and Lauren Simone to move into third place all-time at Princeton with 145 career goals. The senior also became Princeton's second 30-goal scorer this season, scoring three of her four goals in the decisive first half.
"Our winning streak is just about the kind of players we have had here the last few years and how prepared we are for every game, and that says a lot about the coaching staff, "said Sherry. "We have a lot of versatility and have done a good job of adjusting to play a lot of different ways in order to win."
Ingrid Goldberg added two goals for Princeton, which defeated Penn (7-6, 3-2 Ivy) for the 11th straight year. Princeton outshot the Quakers 29-14, including 17-6 in the decisive first half.
Lindsey Cassidy scored two of Penn's three goals, while backup goalie Karrie Moore played well for the Quakers after replacing Liz Lorelli late in the first half, recording 12 saves.
The Tigers, who also moved into a tie with Dartmouth atop the Ivy League standings, have allowed just 13 goals in their last three games. Sarah Kolodner made four saves for Princeton.
Princeton travels to Harvard for an Ivy League game Saturday afternoon (noon, GoPrincetonTigers.com) before returning home April 24 to face Dartmouth in what could be a showdown for the Ivy League title.
