Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at cold and rainy Clarke Field. Penn jumped out to early leads in both games and held off Princeton's comeback attempts in both games.
In the first game, Penn's offense started strong by giving the Quakers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Additional runs in the second and third gave Penn a 5-1 lead after three. Princeton's lone run came in the first when junior B.J. Szymanski scored on an error by Penn pitcher Brian Winings who was trying to pick off sophomore Andrew Salini at first.
The Tigers added runs in the fourth and fifth but Penn scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to post the win. Princeton's fourth-inning run came when sophomore Matthew Becker plated junior Adam Balkan on a sac fly and the run in the fifth came when Balkan tripled home Salini after he had walked. The game was delayed approximately an hour in between the fifth and sixth innings because of rain. Junior Ross Ohlendorf took the loss for Princeton and is now 4-3 on the season. Winings improved to 2-5. Ohlendorf pitched 4.1 innings allowing six earned runs on nine hits. Junior Brian Kappel got two outs in relief before the rain delay and junior Aaron Herr pitched a strong two innings of relief following the stoppage.
In Game 2, Penn once again jumped out to an early lead, plating four runs in the top of the first and never looking back. Penn put up another four runs in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead before Princeton began chipping away.
The Tigers made it 8-1 in the fifth when senior Tim Lahey hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season, to left center. Lahey is now four home runs short of tying Matt Evans atop the Princeton all-time record books for career home runs.
Princeton added another run in the sixth when sophomore Stephen Wendell drew a bases load walk to score Salini who had singled to reach base.
Princeton then posted a five-run seventh inning to close the score to 9-7. With one out, senior Steve Young started the rally with a single up the middle. Balkan then doubled to left center to score Young. After a strikeout, Salini singled up the middle to score Balkan from second. Junior Will Venable drew a walk and he and Salini both scored when Lahey doubled to left field. Lahey then scored on a passed ball and a throwing error by the catcher.
Princeton had chances to even the game up in the final three innings, but left a pair of base runners on in all three frames as Penn pulled off the 9-7 win and swept the afternoon's games.
Penn starter Remington Chin posted the win while freshman Eric Walz fell to 3-3 with the loss. He allowed five earned runs in 4.1 innings on five hits. Senior Brian Biegen and Kappel pitched the final four and two-thirds innings.
