Providence, R.I. - Peter Trombino scored four goals and Scott Sowanick and Ryan Boyle had four assists each to lead Princeton to a 9-6 win over Brown in front of 2,701 at Stevenson Field Saturday afternoon.
The win gave Princeton a share of the Ivy League championship along with Cornell, as both teams finished the season with 5-1 league records. Cornell, who defeated Princeton 12-11 in overtime two weeks ago, won the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, while Princeton figures to get an at-large bid when the field is announced Monday.
Princeton has won at least a share of the Ivy title for each of the last 10 years. "When you come to Princeton, Coach [Bill] Tierney tells you that your first goal should be to win four Ivy titles in four years," said Drew Casino, who had his 20th goal of the year, as well as an assist. "Each year, it's gotten a little more important to me. I know what he means. This game was huge for us."
Boyle's four assists gave him 217 career points and moved him past Jon Hess into second place all-time in scoring at Princeton, behind only Kevin Lowe (247 points). Boyle is already second all-time in assists at Princeton.
"Ryan takes a beating every day," said Tierney. "He's just a great player. I'm amazed by him every day."
Princeton led 4-3 at halftime before taking control in the third quarter, when the Tigers scored three goals while holding Brown without a shot until the final seconds. Princeton led 7-3 going into the fourth quarter, and Brown could not come closer than three goals after that.
"David [Law, the Princeton goalie] saw the ball really well," Tierney said. "That helps the defense. We played a really tough, tight defensive game."
The defense was led by Oliver Barry, who held Chazz Woodson, who came into the game as the league leader in goals scored with 31, to one goal. Princeton held Brown to 22 shots for the day and eight in the second half.
Jason Doneger scored three goals to move past Woodson into the Ivy lead with 33 goals, and he tied Scott Conklin for the second-longest streak in school history with at least one goal in his 28th straight game. He trails only Chris Massey, who had one in 46 straight.
Doneger, Trombino and Casino all have scored at least one goal in every game this season. Trombino's four were a single-game high and gave him 20 for the year along with 11 assists, while Sowanick's four assists were also his highest total and left him with 21 points on the year.
Britton Derkac led Brown with three goals.
"If you had told me before the year that we'd be 9-3, that would have meant a few things," said Tierney, whose team graduated 11 four-year contributors and seven four-year starters from a year ago. "One is that we would probably have a share of the league championship. Two is that we would probably be going to the tournament. And also it would mean that our freshmen and seniors continued the legacy put before them. I'm very proud of them."
