Princeton, N.J. - Darren Spicer scored two goals to lead the Princeton men's soccer team past Drexel 3-0 in its home opener at Lourie-Love Field. The Tigers improved to 2-1 this season while the Dragons dropped to 2-2.
"I'm proud of how well we played defensively," head coach Jim Barlow said. "We rebounded from allowing six goals at Akron and played much more disciplined tonight."
The Tigers dominated time of possession early on, taking four shots and allowing none by the Dragons in the first half. Ben Young assisted on Sean Paylor's second career goal at 32:01 for a 1-0 Princeton lead at the break.
The Orange and Black contained Drexel to start the second half when solid defense led to two breakaway goals. Spicer scored Princeton's second goal at 51:41 by beating Drexel keeper Nick Macri to the right.
Spicer's second goal of the game sealed the win in the 82nd minute when Arturo Tafolla set him up to go one-on-one with Macri once again. The Dragons got off four second-half shots but Princeton goalie Erik White saved the sole shot on goal. Princeton out-shot Drexel 7-4 overall.
Spicer now has four of the team's six goals this season, matching his own team-high in goals and points from last year.
The Tigers return to action this weekend at the Penn Classic in Philadelphia, where they take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 12 p.m. on Friday and nationally-ranked South Carolina at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
