PRINCETON - The Princeton women's squash team won all 27 games in a complete rout of Penn Wednesday night at the Jadwin Squash Courts. The win sends Princeton into a first-place showdown with No. 1 Yale this weekend.
"It was a pretty good match for us," head coach Gail Ramsay said. Everybody showed up and was readfy to play. They were a bit nervous to start, but they did a great job when they really got it going."
Both of Princeton's captains, Patricia Gadsden (No. 9) and Franny McKay (No. 8) won their matches. McKay topped Elizabeth Kern 9-0, 9-3, 9-5 just days after the two played a tough four-game match at last weekend's Princeton Women's Skills tournament. The top match was the closest, as Princeton's Claire Rein-Weston topped Paula Pearson 9-7, 9-5, 9-6. Rein-Weston used a good court coverage and an impressive array of tight, solid shots to win the key points over Pearson.
Freshman Christina Fast won the closest game of the match, topping Caitlin Russell 10-8 in the third game at the No. 4 spot. "Christina played a great match," Ramsay said. "She was able to attack Caitlin in the back corners, especially on the right side. She was down a little in the third, but she came back and won a great match."
Princeton will now face No. 1 Yale on Saturday. The Bulldogs won the 2004 national title and have already defeated No. 2 Trinity this season. Yale is led by two-time Constable champion Michelle Quibell, who also won last year's national individual title. Princeton will need to play its finest match against this Yale squad, but the Tigers are playing well right now and have the type of young talent to give any team a tough match.
