Setting the Table... The Princeton men's hockey team opens up a six-game homestand tonight against American International. The schedule continues this weekend against Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
Last Time Out... Princeton fell 4-0 at Massachusetts six nights ago at the Mullins Center to fall to 4-10-1 on the season.
The Series with American Int'l... Princeton and American International have met eight times with all eight meetings coming between 1953 and 1960. Princeton is 6-2 in those games, winning the last meeting by a score of 13-2 on Feb. 9, 1960. The teams have not met since the Yellow Jackets elevated their program to Division I status for the 1998-99 season.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets... American International is 1-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in Atlantic Hockey. The lone Yellow Jacket win came on Nov. 12 over Army and the tie came at Holy Cross on Nov. 16. AIC last played the weekend of Dec. 10-11 and was swept at home by Air Force, 5-4 and 2-0. The Yellow Jackets have one more game this season against an ECAC Hockey League team at Brown. The team has only played one ECAC team since becoming a Division I team and that was a 6-3 loss at Union last season.
Princeton vs. Atlantic Hockey... Princeton has played several of the teams that currently comprise Atlantic Hockey, but none of those games have come since the league was formed in 1998-99 as the MAAC, and then, Atlantic Hockey. The nine teams that comprise the league are: American International, Army, Bentley, Canisius, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Mercyhurst, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart. The Tigers will face their second Atlantic Hockey opponent of the season three weeks from tonight when they host Bentley. Next season Quinnipiac will leave Atlantic Hockey to join the ECAC Hockey League to fill the spot of Vermont, which is joining Hockey East next season.
Nothing in Common... Princeton and American International have not shared any common opponents yet this season. The Yellow Jackets will meet Brown next Wednesday however.
Princeton Out of Conference... Princeton is 0-4-1 this season in non-conference games. Overall, the ECAC Hockey League is 44-44-11 against other conferences this season and is 13-4-1 against teams from Atlantic Hockey.
The UMass Game... A strong special-teams night lifted Massachusetts past the Tigers 4-0 last Wednesday night. The Minutemen scored two power-play goals and one short-hander, while UMass killed all six Princeton power plays for the win. Princeton goaltender B.J. Sklapsky made 31 saves in the loss.
In the Middle of the Week... Princeton is 1-1 in mid-week games this season, defeating Yale 6-3 on a Tuesday night and falling at UMass 4-0. Over the past two seasons, Princeton is 3-1 in mid-week games, defeating Yale twice and Harvard once.
Nice to be Home... Princeton is 2-2-1 on home ice this season, compared to a 2-8 mark away from Baker Rink.
45 Goals... Princeton has 45 goals in 15 games this season. Last season Princeton's 45th goal came in its 21st game, as the second goal in a 3-2 loss at Clarkson on Jan. 30.
Power Play... Princeton struggled on the power-play at Merrimack and Massachusetts after several strong weeks. Princeton went 1 for 19 in that stretch, which lowered its efficiency to 23.3% overall. It remains at 30.8% in the ECAC Hockey League. Those numbers make Princeton's power play the second best extra-man unit in the league and third in the nation, behind UMass-Lowell and Cornell.
Behind the Bench... First-year Princeton coach Guy Gadowsky picked up his first win behind the Princeton bench on Nov. 6 at Dartmouth. The game was his fourth at Princeton and through 15 games, he is 4-10-1. His ECAC opener at Vermont on Nov. 5 was the first time he had faced an ECAC team in his four seasons of playing college hockey at Colorado College and his five seasons of coaching at Alaska-Fairbanks. Tonight's opponent marks the second MAAC/Atlantic Hockey opponent he has faced. The first was Iona, which no longer sponsors Division I men's hockey.
Moving Forward... Princeton ushers in 2005 with six home games in January. Following tonight, the Tigers host Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Friday and Saturday. Then, after the exam break, play resumes three weeks from tonight when Princeton hosts Bentley. The Tigers play 10 of their final 14 games of the season at home. Princeton is one of three teams (Harvard, Yale) to have played 10 league games this season. Colgate and Cornell have the most game to make up, each having played just six league games at this point.
Looking Around the League... The league standings will change for the first time in several weeks this weekend as there is a full slate of league games involving all 12 teams. By the end of January, all the teams with games in-hand will have caught up and the race for playoff seedings will be in full swing. Princeton currently sits seventh in the league, which would pair them with Rensselaer in a home series.
