Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Darroll Powe scored two goals as the Princeton men's hockey team skated to a 4-2 win over American International Tuesday night at Baker Rink. The win was Princeton's fifth of the season and snapped a six-game losing streak. The game also opened up a six-game homestand for the Tigers that continues this weekend against Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
After a scoreless first period that saw the Tigers (5-10-1; 4-6 ECACHL) outshoot American International (1-10-1; 1-5-1 AH) by a 15-8 margin, the Tigers opened the scoring on a shorthanded goal at 5:15 of the second. On the forecheck, junior Mark Masters peeled the puck off the boards and fed Powe in front. Powe went to his backhand and slid it past AIC goaltender Frank Novello for his second goal of the season and Princeton's second shorthanded marker of the year. Princeton extended the lead to two goals at 12:23 when sophomore Kevin Westgarth stuffed a loose puck over the Yellow Jacket goal line. Junior Brian Carthas took the initial shot and the puck rattled around under Novello and squeezed through just short of the goal line, until Westgarth won the race to it and stuffed it home for his second of the year.
AIC cut the lead in half with 3:39 left in the period when Neil Sullivan scored his first of the year out of a loose scrum in front. Mark Fuqua and Pretone Cicchine assisted. The period ended with the score 2-1 and shots were 10-10.
The Yellow Jackets started the third strong, but Princeton junior Eric Leroux made several big saves to keep the score at 2-1 until Powe scored his second of the game at 7:16. He intercepted a neutral zone pass and skated down the off wing in the AIC zone where he ripped a shot that picked the far-upper corner for his third of the season.
Cicchine brought AIC back within a goal at 18:00 when he beat Leroux from Bryan Jurynec and Ron Miller, but the Tigers responded 44 seconds later to seal the 4-2 win. Freshman Mike Moore started the play behind the net with a lead pass to sophomore Grant Goeckner-Zoeller. He carried it into the AIC zone and set up junior Dustin Sproat with a one-timer in front. Sproat buried it for his 11th of the season. Sproat and Goeckner-Zoeller are tied for the team lead with 21 points.
Leroux climbed back to .500 with the win and is 4-4-1. He stopped 28 shots. Novello made 37 saves in the loss.
Princeton improved to 3-2-1 on home ice this season and continues its homestand Friday night against Clarkson. The win was Princeton's fifth of the season, which equals the win total of a season ago.
