Men's Hockey Posts Exhibition Win Over Waterloo

Princeton, N.J. - Four Tigers scored goals as the Princeton men's hockey team defeated Waterloo 4-2 in exhibition-hockey action Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Sophomore Mike Moore scored the game-winning goal early in the third period on the power play. Princeton opens the regular season next Friday night at Notre Dame.
The Tigers opened the game strong by outshooting Waterloo 18-2 in the opening period. Princeton took the lead at the 4:23 mark when junior Christian Read redirected a blast from the point off the stick off junior Seamus Young into the Waterloo net. It was the first of three power-play goals on the night for the Tigers. The fourth goal was shorthanded.
Waterloo evened the score at 1-1 midway through the second period when Matt Levicki shoved home a rebound on the power play, but the game only remained tied for four minutes until sophomore Kyle Hagel gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Junior Brett Westgarth picked off a clearing attempt at the left point and fed the puck to Hagel on the other point. Hagel skated down to the face-off dot and beat Waterloo goaltender Curtis Darling on the glove side.
Princeton took a 2-1 lead in the second intermission and made that lead 4-1 with two early goals in the third period. Moore made the score 3-1 on a one-timer at 5:01 of the third period off a pass from freshman Brandan Kushniruk. Sophomore Keith Shattenkirk closed the Princeton scoring when he picked a corner off the rush while shorthanded. Freshman Lee Jubinville assisted on the goal. Waterloo's Adam Metherel scored the game's final goal at 9:31 of the period. All three Tiger goaltenders played a period in the win. Senior Eric Leroux made two saves in the opening period, junior B.J. Sklapsky stopped six shots in the second and freshman Thomas Sychterz made six saves in the third period. He also posted the win. Darling made 37 saves for Waterloo.
Princeton begins the regular season next weekend with two games at Notre Dame.
