Princeton Fencers Take Two of Top Three Places in Men's Epee at Garret Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Princeton fencers Tommi Hurme and Ben Solomon finished second and third, respectively, in the epee on Sunday at Penn State's Garret Open in the first event of the 2005-06 season. Penn State's Arthur Urman needed overtime to top three-time NCAA finalist Solomon in the event's semifinals and won the event by edging Hurmi, 15-13.
Freshman Max Peck posted a 13th-place finish in the epee, with senior Fenil Ghodadra taking 25th, rookie Noah Arjomand finishing 35th and sophomore Matt Solomon placing 39th.
In the saber, team captain Owen Cornwall finished 19th with sophomore John Winnerman right behind in 20th. Another Princeton duo finisheed back to back in the weapon, with sophomores David Leffler and Robert Brenner finishing 27th and 28th, respectively. Rounding out the Orange and Black saber contingent were junior Eric Besson (43rd) and freshman Siddharth Bhaskar (44th). Junior John-Paul Mitchell was the top Princeton finisher in the foil, taking 17th. Senior Alexander Vandenberg-Rodes finished 24th with sophomore Doug Hohensee 27th and freshman Jonathan Mayer 52nd.
The Tigers are away from competition until Dec. 3, when the men's and women's teams head back to Penn State for a dual meet with North Carolina, Rutgers and NYU in addition to the host Nittany Lions.
