PRINCETON - The Princeton women's swimming and diving team opened its 2005-06 Ivy League schedule in style Saturday, sweeping Penn and Cornell at Denunzio Pool. Led by three-event winner Brett Shiflett, Princeton topped Penn 167-131 and Cornell 190-102.
Ellen Gray gave Princeton its first win when she took the 1000 free in 10:13.00. That started a run of six straight victories for Princeton swimmers, including two for Brett Shifflett. The sophomore claimed the 200 free in 1:52.11 and the 200 butterfly in 2:05.95.
Kelly Hannigan (100 back, 58.36) and Sarah Schaffer (100 breast, 1:05.14) also claimed wins during that stretch, as did Katie Miller, who sprinted to a win in the 50 free in a time of 24.15. Miller would follow that up with a win in the 100 free later in the meet, winning a thriller in 53.53, .07 of a second in front of Lauren Bergstrom of Penn.
Michelle Demond won the 3-meter diving competition midway through the meet (296.80), and the Princeton swimmers went right back to their winning ways following the break. Lisa Hamming claimed the 200 back in 2:07.71, barely topping teammate Kitsie Kerner's time of 2:07.89. Whitney Ryan won the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.28, and Shiflett came back to claim her third win by taking the 500 free in 4:58.92.
