Princeton, N.J. - Princeton freshman forward Brandan Kushniruk was named the ECAC Hockey League's Rookie of the Week on Monday for his four-point performance in a pair of games against Quinnipiac. Kushniruk scored the first two goals of his career and added an assist in the Tigers' 6-3 win over the Bobcats on Saturday.
Kushniruk, who entered the week with one assist through his first eight games, notched an assist on classmate Brett Wilson's goal in the first period of Tuesday's loss to the Bobcats at home. He continued his week with three points when the team's met Saturday in New Haven.
Down 2-0 in the second period, Kushniruk intercepted a pass and quickly shot it over the right shoulder of Quinnipiac's goaltender to make the score 2-1 and begin the momentum swing in Princeton's favor. Moments later, he was in on the scoring of senior Brian Carthas' goal that tied the game up at 2-2. The Tigers built a 4-2 lead before Kushniruk added his second goal of the game when he redirected a point shot from Carthas into the Quinnipiac goal.
Kushniruk became the second Tiger this season to record three points in a game. Junior Kevin Westgarth had three assists in Princeton's season-opening win at Notre Dame. Kushniruk's weekly award is the first won by a Tiger this season and is Princeton's first league Rookie of the Week award since the 2001-02 season.
Princeton is back in action on Friday night when the Tigers visit ECACHL and Ivy foe Cornell.
