Princeton, N.J. - Princeton junior goaltender B.J. Sklapsky made 41 saves as the Princeton men's hockey team posted a 3-0 shutout against Dartmouth on Friday night at Baker Rink. Junior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller gave Princeton a 1-0 lead late in the first period and the Tigers added two insurance goals in the third to win their league opener.
Princeton improved to 2-1 overall with the win, while Dartmouth fell to 0-2.
After withstanding a Dartmouth barrage of shots early in the first period, the Tigers began to put pressure on the Dartmouth end late in the period. The Big Green held a 12-4 shot edge midway through the period. Princeton pressured late, making the shots 1412 by the end of the period and scored to make it 1-0 on the power play.
Sophomore Mike Moore had the puck on the blue line and slid a pass to senior Brian Carthas on the opposite point. Carthas took a shot that Dartmouth goaltender Sean Samuel saved, but Goeckner-Zoeller jumped on the rebound and scored his third goal of the season at 18:42 of the second period.
Neither team scored in the second period as Princeton outshot Dartmouth 14-9 in the frame, including a pair of breakaways by sophomore Landis Stankievech and senior Patrick Neundorfer in the first 40 seconds of the frame.
Princeton made the score 2-0 with a goal six minutes into the third period. Following a flurry of action in the Tiger end, Carthas was able to clear the Princeton zone and dump the puck behind the Dartmouth net. Strong fore-checking pressure by sophomore Erik Pridham resulted in a turnover in the corner and Pridham fed Neundorfer who snapped a shot that beat Samuel for Neundorfer's second goal of the season. From there it was the Sklapsky show as he made 18 third-period saves to record his first collegiate shutout. His 41 saves was also a career-high, eclipsing the 38 he made in a 2-2 tie at Dartmouth during the 2003-04 season. Samuel made 31 saves for Dartmouth.
Sophomore Keith Shattenkirk added an empty-netter with one second remaining.
Princeton returns to the ice tomorrow at 7 p.m. against Harvard.
