PRINCETON - The Princeton women's swimming & diving team got one message across to the rest of the Ivy League during the first day of the Ivy League championships - if somebody is going to come to DeNunzio Pool and win the Ivy title, that team will have to swim the ultimate meet.
Princeton, which has won five straight Ivy League titles and 15 overall, went to the head of the pack after the first day of the league championships. The Tigers have 454.5 points heading into Friday, while Harvard has 437 points. The two teams have pulled away from the rest of the league, as Yale is third in the league with 290 points.
The Tigers jumped out of the gates with a win in the 200 free relay. The team of Chrissy Macauley, Sobenna George, Amy Jones and Stephanie Hsiao finished first in 1:32.56, topping Harvard by more than 1.5 seconds. Harvard got back on track in the 500 free, taking four of the top five positions. Sophomore Noelle Bassi won the event for Harvard in 4:50.78, but Princeton freshman Brett Shiflett secured key points by taking second by .03 of a second. Shiflett finished in 4:54.34.
The Tigers came right back and finished 1-2-3 in the 200 IM. Hsiao, a six-event winner last year, took the race in 2:03.16, while freshman Lisa Hamming took second in 2:03.40 and sophomore Kelly Hannigan came in third in 2:03.77.
Princeton would get another second-place finish (400 medley relay, 3:48.56) and a third-place finish (50 free, Macauley, 23.61) to end the day with a slim edge over Harvard. The competition continues Friday with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.
