PRINCETON - The Harvard women's swimming and diving team jumped to the front of the 2005 Ivy League championships during Friday's evening session. Despite three wins for the Tigers, the Crimson dominated enough events to take a 55-point lead into the final day.
Harvard leads the competition with 1,031 points, while the five-time defending league champion Princeton Tigers have 976 points. Third-place Yale leads the six other programs battling for overall position with 664 points.
Princeton started the night off right with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Kelly Hannigan, Stephanie Hsiao, Katie Miller and Chrissy Macauley came in at 1:43.62, .21 of a second faster than Harvard. The Crimson gained key points in the 1000 free by finishing 1-2-3, with Princeton's Libby Engelmeier placing fourth in 10:07.44. The Crimson followed that up with a win in the 400 IM, although sophomore Kelly Hannigan (second, 4:19.26) and freshman Lisa Hamming (fourth, 4:21.78) each finished in the top four and helped gain key points.
Harvard and Princeton each split the next two races, with both schools coming in 1-2 in one race. The Crimson swept the top two spots in the 100 fly, while the Tigers came in 1-2 in the 200 free. Freshman Brett Shiflett won the event in 1:50.25, while senior Amy Jones placed second in 1:50.31.
Hsiao followed that with a win in the 100 breast (1:03.52), while Princeton took two of the top five spots in the 100 back: sophomore Kelly Hannigan placed third in 56.41, and junior Kitsie Kerner placed fifth in 57.27.
The Tigers ended the evening with excitement, taking the 800 free relay in 7:24.89. Shiflett, Jones, Hsiao and Hamming topped Harvard's top team to keep the deficit 55 points heading into Saturday.
