Schenectady, N.Y. - Princeton junior Eric Leroux stole the show as he made 38 saves in a scoreless tie for the Princeton men's hockey team Saturday night against Union at Achilles Center. It was Leroux's second shutout of the season. Justin Mrazek made 16 saves in the Union net.
Princeton is now 8-18-3 overall and 6-14-2 in the ECAC. Union is 12-20-2 overall and 8-13-1 in the ECAC.
The tie was Princeton's first scoreless tie in program history, which dates back to the 1900-01 season.
For the third time in as many games, neither team could score in the first period. Union fired five shots on Leroux and the Tigers took four on Mrazek, but neither team could push one past either goaltender. Little was settled in the second period, as the period closely resembled the first with each goalie keeping the other team off the scoreboard. Union held a 10-5 shot advantage, but the Tiger owned the best scoring chances, as both junior Mark Masters and sophomore Darroll Powe had chance from close in. Also freshman Landis Stankievech launched a shorthanded shot that rang off the post.
The goaltending show continued through a third scoreless period. Union's offense woke up in the frame as the Dutchmen fired 18 shots on Leroux. Princeton managed 10 on Mrazek, but it was Leroux who stole the show in the period, including a pair of great saves with 1:15 remaining to force the overtime period.
Leroux continued to impress in the overtime, stopping Jordan Webb on a breakaway a minute into the extra session. Leroux finished the night with 38 saves, while Mrazek made 16 for Union.
Despite not scoring a point, junior Dustin Sproat clinched a share of the ECAC conference scoring title with Dartmouth's Lee Stempniak. Both had 27 league points.
The Tigers begin the ECAC playoffs next weekend in the best-of-three first round at St. Lawrence. Princeton was 0-1-1 against the Saints in the regular season. The series will begin next Friday night. Exact times will be announced early in the week.
