Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team split a doubleheader with Stony Brook on Friday afternoon at Clarke Field. The Tigers posted a 3-2 win in the first game, but fell 7-2 in the nightcap. The two teams will complete their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at 11:30 a.m. The games will be played at Princeton's Clarke Field, not at Stony Brook as was originally scheduled.
In the opening game, Stony Brook jumped to a 2-0 lead with a single run in the first and fifth innings. Princeton rallied back for the deficit with a three-run fifth to take the lead. With two outs in the inning, sophomore Aaron Prince doubled down the left field line. That brought up senior Will Venable's whose grounder was misplayed by Stony Brook's shortstop and put runners on the corners for junior Andrew Salini, who hit a 1-1 pitch to the warning track in left field to score the two runs and even the score. The double put Salini on second and he scored when junior Ryan Eldridge singled up the middle.
Sophomore Gavin Fabian pitched all seven innings for the win. He allowed one earned run on four hits to improve to 2-1 on the season. Seawolf starter Jon Lewis surrendered three unearned runs on eight Princeton hits in the loss. In the second game, Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed as it won 7-2. Princeton knotted the game at 1-1 in the third on a solo home run by junior Stephen Wendell. His third homer of the year was hit to left field.
The Seawolves jumped ahead again with a run in the fifth inning, but the Tigers got that run back in the sixth. Prince reached on an error and then got to third when Stony Brook pitcher Brian Murtaugh threw away a pick off attempt. He scored on an RBI-single by Venable.
Stony Brook scored the go-ahead run in its next at-bat and tacked on four more in the eighth inning to pick up the 7-2 win.
Sophomore Eric Walz started the game and pitched six innings, giving up six hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. He struck out five. Senior Worth Lumry came on for the seventh and allowed a run and was then charged with all four of the eighth-inning runs. Freshman Reid Peyton came on to get out of the inning and he pitched two scoreless innings. Murtaugh earned the complete game win with two runs on six hits.
Princeton is now 3-10 overall while Stony Brook is 6-12.
The same two teams will continue their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Stony Brook, but poor field conditions moved the games to Clarke Field.
