PRINCETON - The Juniata Eagles led throughout most of Saturday's EIVA contest and, despite a strong performance from Princeton middle Sean Vitousek, swept the Tigers 3-0 in a match that could have helped the home squad secure a spot in the postseason.
Instead, the loss drops Princeton to 3-10 overall and 2-7 in the EIVA Tait Division. There are six postseason spots from the division, and with Penn State, George Mason, Rutgers-Newark and Juniata having sewn up their bids, that leaves two open positions for either Princeton, Springfield and N.Y.U. The Tigers will have an even tougher road on Sunday when they host the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions.
Vitousek had 15 kills and hit .448 in the match, while freshman outside hitter Peter Eichler had 12 kills. Setter Jack Pichard had 31 assists, while libero Mark Stevens had 11 digs.
Princeton trailed early in both of the first two games, but each time the Tigers were able to keep the deficit at a manageable level. In each game, Juniata served a game ball, only to have Princeton sideout and then win at least one more point on its own serve.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, they lost both of those games 30-28. Juniata wouldn't let the final game be as dramatic; the Eagles took control early and never let up in a 30-25 win.
Princeton will host Penn State Sunday at 4 p.m.
