PRINCETON - Head coach Chris Sailer said her team was "not a finished product yet." Unfortunately for the No. 6 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team, the three-time defending NCAA finalists are still pretty special. The Tigers overcame a feisty Blue Jay squad to win its 2005 opener 9-6 at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Senior Lindsey Biles, a gametime decision to begin with, led motivated Princeton squad to a dominant second half. She scored four of Princeton's five goals after intermission and led the Tigers back from a 5-4 deficit.
"We just got fired up," Biles said. "We just weren't playing our game." Johns Hopkins had plenty to do with that. The No. 6 team in the country, coming off a strong win over Davidson, overcame an early 2-0 deficit to eventually take a 4-3 lead on back-to-back goals by Meagan Voight, and then went into halftime with the 5-4 lead after a goal by Sarah Walsh.
That would be the final lead of the game for the Blue Jays, who simply didn't have an answer for Biles in the second half. Following an unassisted goal 34 seconds into the first half and the first career goal by freshman Katie Lewis-Lamonica, Biles scored three straight to put the game away.
"It wasn't always pretty," Sailer said. "They put a lot of pressure on us. The kids showed a lot of courage tonight. We had a lot of young people in the game, and the key seniors stepped up in the end."
One of those key seniors was goaltender Sarah Kolodner, who made 14 saves and kept Johns Hopkins from ever establishing more than a one-goal lead.
