New Haven, Conn. - Dan Kallaugher won 17 of 20 face-offs, including all 13 in the final three quarters, as Yale dominated possession and defeated Princeton 9-8 in front of 750 soggy fans at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium Saturday afternoon. George Carafides made two saves in the final 30 seconds to preserve the win.
The loss dropped Princeton to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the Ivy League, while Yale improved to 5-2 and 2-1. Princeton, who will turn around and play at Penn Tuesday afternoon, has lost five games by a combined 11 goals.
Mike Gaudio had a career-high three goals for Princeton.
"We never had the ball," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "It's an age-old story for us. They did a great job controlling the ball, and they hit their shots when they had to."
David Schecter scored 1:27 into the game as the Bulldogs never trailed. In all, Yale had the lead for 57:19 of the game, and it was tied for 2:41.
For the season, Princeton has now played 300 minutes and has had the lead for 33:36 of that time. The Tigers have not had the lead at the end of any of the 20 quarters that they have played.
"It seems like that's how its gone all year," said Tierney. "We didn't execute early on defense, and they got up on us. It's tough to play like that."
Schecter's goal was followed by another from Chris Kempner 1:09 later, and the Bulldogs made it 3-0 when David Levy converted a transition opportunity off a feed from longstick Gray Eklund with just 5:06 gone in the game.
Princeton cut the lead to one on goals from Mike Gaudio and Peter Trombino, and from that point, the teams traded goals for the next 40 minutes. During that stretch, Yale built its lead to two three times, and each time Princeton scored the next goal but could not tie it Finally, with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter, Gaudio was able to follow up a Scott Sowanick goal with one of his own to pull the Tigers even at 6-6. Just when it looked like Princeton had some momentum, Dan Brillman scored on a wraparound goal 55 seconds into the fourth and assisted on Seth Goldberg's goal 49 seconds later to make it a two-goal game again at 8-6.
Tripp Shriner scored for Princeton with midway through the quarter, but Goldberg's fourth made it a two-goal game once again with 6:57 to go. Yale continued to dominate the ball as Kallaugher won all six fourth-quarter face-offs, but the Tigers did not go quietly.
Peter Trombino rifled a shot that appeared to hit the pipe and bounce away, but the officials ruled that it had gone in first, and it was a 9-8 game with 3:26 remaining. Yale won the next face-off and maintained possession through a penalty against Princeton - its seventh of the game - but Matthew Larkin intercepted a pass with just over a minute to go and Zach Goldberg cleared it for Princeton before Tierney called a timeout with 56 seconds to play.
Carafides then stopped shots by Gaudio and Trombino after that, and Bulldog captain D.J. Barry ran the ball out of the Bulldog end and killed the final 15 seconds.
Trombino and Sowanick had two goals each, and Sowanick added two assists. All eight Princeton goals came from sophomores, and 33 of Princeton's 37 goals on the year have now come from freshmen or sophomores.
Yale outshot Princeton 38-30. Larkin, making his second career start, made 11 saves for the Tigers. Carafides made 12 saves for Yale.
