NEW YORK CITY - The Princeton men's volleyball team knew there were two possible outcomes of its match Tuesday night at NYU. A win would put the Tigers back into the EIVA playoffs as the No. 5 seed, while a loss would relegate them into the middle division of EIVA play in 2006. The seniors made sure that the first option would be the right option.
Outside hitter Blake Robinson led all players with 21 kills while classmate and middle blocker Sean Vitousek added 17 kills and two blocks in the 3-1 win at NYU. After splitting the first two games of the match with identical 30-28 scores, Princeton won the final two games 30-23 and 30-24 to clinch the match.
The two seniors combined to hit .492 in the win.
The seniors had some help from their younger teammates, as freshman outside Peter Eichler had 16 kills and sophomore opposite Reid Joseph had 10 kills and a .692 hitting percentage. Junior setter Jack Pichard recorded 59 assists and four digs, while junior libero Mark Stevens led Princeton with six digs.
The win ensures Princeton a spot in the EIVA quarterfinal against the fourth-place team, which is currently Rutgers-Newark. Princeton lost both matches to Newark, although the Tigers took Rutgers to five games in the match at Newark this season.
