Baseball Drops Opener at Dartmouth 9-2

Hanover, N.H. - Dartmouth scored three times inthe first inning and never looked back as the Big Green defeated the Princeton baseball team 9-2 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Red Rolfe Field. Senior Will Venable was 2 for 4 with an RBI in the game.
Dartmouth (6-9, 3-2 Ivy) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with three runs on two hits, a walk, a hit batter and three Princeton fielding errors. Andrew Nacario was hit by a pitch and Will Schmidley walked to put who runners on base. Jeff Speights then hit a grounder to third. Junior third baseman Zach Wendkos touched third but couldn't convert the double play to keep two on base. Brian Zurhellen then doubled down the left field line to score both runners. Josh Bailey then singled to score Zurhellen.
Princeton (9-13, 4-1 Ivy) got a run back in the second thanks to three singles. Junior Stephen Wendell started the rally with a single through the left side. Junior Matthew Becker then singled to left to put runners on first and second. A flyout by sophomore Aaron Prince pushed Wendell to third and he scored when senior Will Venable singled to right field for his second single of the day.
Dartmouth regained the three-run lead in the third inning. Will Bashelor drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a groundout. He stole third and scored on Zurhellen's single to make the score 4-1. The Big Green then added five runs in the fourth to make the score 9-1 after four full innings. Three straight RBI hits by Bashelor, Speights and Zurhellen plated the runs. Princeton added a run in the fifth inning to make the score 9-2. Senior Adam Balkan singled up the middle. He went to second on an error when sophomore Sal Iacono lined out to third base ad Dartmouth's third baseman tried to catch him off the bag. He then scored when Wendkos doubled to left center.
Princeton outhit the Big Green 9-7 in the game but could not get the timely hit to put more runs on the board.
Sophomore Gavin Fabian pitched four innings and allowed nine runs, eight of which were earned, on seven hits and four walks. He fell to 2-2 with the loss. Freshman Reid Peyton pitched the final two innings and allowed no hits. Dartmouth's Jeff Wilkerson earned the win.
