Enter the Break on a High Note
The Princeton men's hockey team will look to enter its 17-day layoff for final exams on a high note when it hosts Colgate and Cornell this weekend at Baker Rink. The games concludes Princeton's six-game mid-season intercession schedule. The Tigers are currently 1-2-1 during the stretch.
Last Time Out
Princeton got a point during its home league weekend with Yale and Brown last weekend after tying the Bears 2-2 on Saturday. On Friday, the Tigers jumped to a 1-0 lead through one period, but Yale scored twice in the second and four times in the third for a 6-1 win. On Saturday, both teams traded goals in each of the first two periods in the stalemate. Princeton freshman Brett Wilson scored both Tiger goals.
The Mid-Season Stretch
This weekend's games mark the final weekend of Princeton's three-week intercession stretch. Princeton has a win over Denver, a tie with Brown and losses to Boston College and Yale in the span.
Princeton vs. Colgate
Princeton is 34-44-6 all-time against Colgate and is 20-19-4 against the Raiders on Baker Rink's ice. Colgate enters the game unbeaten in eight against Princeton, including a 3-2 win at Colgate in December. In that game, Princeton led 2-0, but Colgate rallied for the win with two goals in the third period. Senior Patrick Neundorfer and sophomore Kyle Hagel scored for Princeton in the game.
Scouting The Raiders
Colgate enters the weekend 10-5-5 on the season but has not recorded a victory since its win over the Tigers on Dec. 3. Colgate is 0-3-2 since, including ties with Brown and St. Cloud State. The winless streak has dropped Colgate out of the USA Today poll and to No. 16 in the uscho.com poll.
Princeton vs. Cornell
Princeton and Cornell have played 120 times with Cornell holding a 72-41-7 all-time series edge. Princeton is 20-29-5 against Cornell at home and is looking to pick up its first win against the Big Red since the 2000-01 season. Princeton has lost the last 10 games in the series, including a 4-1 loss in Ithaca in December. Junior Darroll Powe scored Princeton's lone goal in the game.
Scouting The Big Red
Cornell enters the weekend with the nation's longest current unbeaten streak as it hasn't lost in eight games (6-0-2). The Big Red has played once in 2006 and defeated RIT in that game, 3-1, last Saturday at home.
December in CNY
This weekend marks Princeton's first repeat league weekend as the Tigers made the trip to Central New York to face Colgate and Cornell in early December. On that trip, Princeton dropped both games. On the first night at Cornell, the Big Red jumped ahead 2:15 in the game and led the rest of the way in a 4-1 win. The following night at Colgate, Princeton went ahead 1-0 in the final minute of the first and stretched the lead to 2-0 eight minutes into the second. Colgate chipped a goal off the lead with eight minutes left in the second, before evening and pulling ahead early in the third period.
Against Ranked Teams
Colgate and Cornell are the seventh and eighth ranked opponents for Princeton this season. The Tigers are 1-5 for the season against ranked teams with a win over Denver. That win was its first against a ranked team since a win on Nov. 12, 2003 against Harvard, which was then ranked 12th. Three of the five losses have come by a single goal, including Princeton's 3-2 loss at Colgate on Dec. 3.
A Hand in All Goals
Junior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller added to his team-lead of 13 points this season as he had a hand in all three Princeton goals last weekend. On Friday he opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season and on Saturday he assisted on both of Brett Wilson's power-play goals.
Honor Roll
Freshman Brett Wilson scored both goals on the power-play in last Saturday night's tie with Brown. It was Wilson's second two-goal game of the season. He was named to the ECACHL Honor Roll for his performance. Wilson was named the league's Rookie of the Week after his first two-goal game of the year.
Freshman Scoring
Wilson's two goals against Brown pushed his season total to seven. That is the most goals for a Princeton freshman since Benoit Morin scored 11 goals during the 1997-98 season.
Third Assists
Junior defensemen Daryl Marcoux and Max Cousins each added assists last weekend, snapping two of Princeton's three longest pointless streaks. Marcoux was pointless in six games, while Cousins had not recorded a point in 11 games.
In The Pipes
Junior goaltender B.J. Sklapsky made his first start in the Princeton goal on Saturday against Brown since facing Quinnipiac on Nov. 22. Sklapsky made 28 saves in the 2-2 tie.
Balanced Effort
Princeton's 41 goals this season have come from 14 scorers, led by Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and Brett Wilson with seven each. Senior Patrick Neundorfer and sophomore Kyle Hagel each have four goals this season.
Defense First
Princeton has held its opponents to three goals or less, not counting empty-net goals, in 14 of 18 games.
The PP
Princeton's power play scored both goals in Saturday's 2-2 tie. It was team's seventh game in which it scored two power-play goals. Princeton has a single power-play goal in four other games.
Princeton Out of Conference
Princeton's non-conference record stands at 3-3 after its win over Denver and its loss to Boston College. Princeton has wins over Notre Dame, Alabama-Huntsville and Denver. Princeton has one remaining non-league game on the schedule, a Jan. 31 game at Robert Morris. Princeton's current record in non-league games is its best since going 5-2 in the 1998-99 season. Princeton next best season was 2004-05 when it went 2-4-1 in its seven non-conference games.
81 Goals
Princeton scored 81 goals in 31 games last season. That number was 19 more than the total of 62 that Princeton scored in 31 games last season. Princeton has 42 goals through 18 games this season and is on pace to score 73.
Polling Station
Princeton was picked to finish 10th by both the coaches and the media in the ECACHL preseason polls. Cornell was selected first in both polls while Colgate was selected fifth by the coaches and second by the media.
On the Horizon
Princeton will resume its schedule on Jan. 31 at Robert Morris following its break for final exams.
