Men's Fencing Sweeps Vassar, Sacred Heart By Matching 21-6 Scores

PRINCETON - The Princeton men's fencing squad opened the 2006 portion of its schedule successfully, defeating both Vassar and Sacred Heart in home dual meets last Sunday. Princeton won each event in both dual meets, including one 8-1 victory in each match.
Princeton 21, Vassar 6
The Tigers got an 8-1 advantage in the epee en route to its comfortable win. Both sophomore Tommi Hurme and freshman Max Peck swept the weapon, and senior Fenil Ghodadra chipped in with two wins of his own.
Alexander Vandenberg-Rodes won three matches in foil to help the Tigers to a 7-2 advantage in the weapon. Douglas Hohensee and John-Paul Mitchell won two apiece, including a 5-4 victory for the latter to clinch the final 7-2 advantage in the weapon.
Vassar got its most wins in the sabre, but it wasn't enough to even clinch the weapon. Three wins by John Winnerman, two by Owen Cornwall and one by David Lefler gave Princeton a 6-3 edge.
Princeton 21, Sacred Heart 6
The Tigers reversed its fortunes in the Sacred Heart match, winning eight matches in sabre, seven in foil and six in epee, but the final result was the same, a 21-6 win. Cornwall and Robert Brenner each won three matches against Sacred Heart in sabre, and Winnerman chipped in with two more, including a 5-4 decision.
Hohensee led Princeton to its 7-2 advantage in foil with three wins, and Mitchell chipped in with two others. Both Vandenberg-Rodes and Jesse Platt won one match apiece.
Peck and Noah Arjomand led Princeton to a tight 6-3 edge in epee. Peck won both of his matches by 5-4 scores, and Arjomand added two wins of his own. Both Hurme and Ghodadra added one win apiece.
Princeton will head on the road next weekend to compete against Brown and Penn.
