PRINCETON - Freshman Brett Wilson notched his second two-goal game of the season as the Princeton men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Brown on Saturday night at Baker Rink. Wilson's goals were his sixth and seventh of the season and junior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller added assists on both.
After a fast-paced start to the game, which featured few whistles, the Tigers struck first with Wilson's first goal of the game on the power play. The goal came just four seconds into a hitting from behind major penalty called on Brown's Brian Ihnacak. After an offensive zone face-off win by Wilson, Goeckner-Zoeller got the puck to junior Max Cousins along the blue line. Cousins fired a shot towards the goal that Wilson redirected by Brown goaltender Adam D'Alba.
With Princeton still on the power play, the Tigers were whistled for too many men with 2:51 left in the man-advantage, setting up a four-on-four situation. With just over 40 seconds left in the four-on-four play, the Tigers were whistled for another penalty, giving Brown a 4-on-3 opportunity. The Bears' Sean Hurley netted his fourth goal of the year when his shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle went behind Princeton's B.J. Sklapsky and into the goal mouth, where it was tipped into the back of the net by a Tiger defenseman.
Princeton pushed its lead to 2-1 at 3:23 of the second on another power-play goal. Cycling the puck low in the corner, Goeckner-Zoeller worked the puck to freshman Brandan Kushinurk, who hit Wilson with a pass in the slot that Wilson redirected over the shoulder of D'Alba. The lead lasted nine minutes before Brown answered back. With each team skating four players, David Robertson fed the puck to Jeff Prough and Prough found Antonin Roux skating along the right wing. Roux beat his defender, and fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle that beat Princeton junior goaltender B.J. Sklapsky on the stick-side, tying the game at 2-2 at the 12:22 mark.
With the two teams still tied late in the game, the Bears nearly went ahead with just over six minutes left as four Brown players got shots in on Sklapsky, but the junior goaltender was equal to the task and the game went to overtime.
Princeton had the best scoring chances in the extra session as the Tigers put three shots on D'Alba, but could not cash in and the game ended in a 2-2 deadlock.
Sklapsky made 28 saves in the Tiger goal while D'Alba made 28 for Brown.
The tied pushed Princeton's record to 5-12-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the ECACHL, while Brown is now 2-10-3 overall and 2-6-1 in league play.
Princeton is back in action next Friday night against Colgate at 7 p.m.
