McHugh's Late Goal Gives Tigers 2-2 Tie at Columbia
October 14, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Princeton looked like it was out of luck in the final minute of regulation Saturday night against Columbia. Instead, the Tigers found a hero to conclude a wild final seven minutes of the second half.
Kyle McHugh scored his third goal of the year with just 35 seconds left in the half, tying the game at 2-2 just seconds after the Lions had gone ahead, and the game ended in that same 2-2 tie at Columbia Soccer Stadium after 20 minutes of overtime.
Columbia's Tom Smith had seemingly given his team its first win over Princeton since 2002 when he scored with 1:02 left in regulation, but McHugh and the Tigers had other plans 27 seconds later. Matt Kontos was credited with the assist on McHugh's big goal.
Princeton had also trailed 1-0 with under 10 minutes left, but Devin Muntz scored his second goal in the final 10 minutes in as many games, with just less than seven minutes on the clock, to tie the game at 1-1. Brian Brady had the assist on a cross into the middle of the field.
The Tigers (6-5-3, 1-2-1 Ivy) and Lions (5-5-2, 0-2-2 Ivy) had played an even first half that ended scoreless, but Columbia went ahead in the 57th minute when Shaun Rowatt scored.
Columbia had two shots in the second 10-minute overtime, but one was blocked and another from Smith was saved by Princeton goalie Joe Walter, who finished the game with five saves. Princeton's Jame Wunsch also had a chance in the second overtime, just 35 seconds in, but his shot was high.
The Tigers also had two shot attempts in the first 10 minutes of overtime. Princeton outshot the Lions 13-12 for the game.
Princeton hosts Harvard at Lourie-Love Field next Saturday.
