Princeton Falls to Navy 9-7

PRINCETON -- Sophomore Brendan Colgan scored three times on Saturday but the 14th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team was unable to overcome an early 2-0 deficit as 10th-ranked Navy topped the Tigers 9-7 at DeNunzio Pool.
The game began with five minutes of stellar defense as neither team was able to take advantage of their possessions and the game remained scoreless. Navy broke the deadlock with two goals in 37 seconds and held a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Princeton had a good chance to cut the Navy lead in half early in the second quarter when freshman Gregor Horstmeyer put a shot off the post. Princeton eventually was able to get on the scoreboard at 2:53 when Colgan scored his first goal of the game off a feed from sophomore Eric Vreeland. Navy scored to regain the two-goal lead, but senior Nicholas Seaver scored while Princeton was a man-up to make the lead 3-2. Navy closed out the second quarter scoring with 1.26 seconds left on the clock when Todd Carlson scored during a Navy man-up situation.
Entering the third period trailing 4-2, Princeton moved within a goal at 5:01 when Vreeland lobbed in a goal after receiving a pass from Colgan, but a Mike Mulvey 4-meter shot gave Navy the 5-3 lead at 4:43. Two more Navy goals in the period, split up by a Colgan goal gave Navy a 7-4 lead at the end of the three periods.
Seaver opened the scoring of the final quarter with a goal 47 seconds in following a pass from freshman Mark Zalewski. Princeton had chances from there, but were unable to convert and Navy scored at 4:26 to regain the two-goal advantage. Colgan and senior Reid Joseph added fourth period goals, but Aaron Recko also scored one for Navy as the game ended 9-7 in Navy's favor.
Princeton fell to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the CWPA while Navy is now 16-5 overall and 6-0 in the league. Princeton is back in action in a week when it plays at Johns Hopkins and has a rematch at Navy.
