This Week's Storylines
Back at Home
The Princeton Men's Hockey team returns to Baker Rink to face Cornell and Colgate after playing its last four games away from home. Princeton heads back to the road for four more games after this weekend.
Last Weekend
The Tigers dropped their fourth-straight one-goal game last Friday night at St. Lawrence, before getting their first win of the season last Saturday afternoon at Clarkson.
Too Close for Comfort
Dating back to last season, 13 of Princeton's last 15 games have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie, including all six games this season. Princeton is 2-8-3 in those 13 games. Seven of those games have gone to overtime and Princeton is 0-5-2 in those games.
The Series With Cornell
Princeton and Cornell have met 121 times with Cornell holding a 72-42-7 series edge. The Big Red had won 10-straight games in the series before Princeton shut Cornell out 3-0 last January. Darroll Powe scored twice in the game. Cornell holds a 28-21-5 edge in games played in Princeton.
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell is 5-1-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in the ECACHL to tie for second early in the season. Cornell enters the weekend off its first loss of the year after beginning the season 5-0. Cornell has league wins over Brown, Yale and Harvard, and a loss to Dartmouth.
A Season Ago
Princeton and Cornell split their games a season ago with both teams winning on home ice. In December in Ithaca, Darroll Powe scored Princeton's lone goal in a 4-1 loss. In January in Princeton, Powe gave Princeton a 1-0 lead late in the first period and the margin held until late in the third when Princeton added to insurance goals for the 3-0 win. The win was Princeton's first shutout of Cornell since 1964 and snapped a 10-game winless streak against Cornell.
The Series With Colgate
Princeton and Colgate have met 85 times with Colgate leading the all-time series 44-35-6. The Tigers had been winless in eight games against the Raiders before posting a 5-3 win last January. Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored twice in the game and Darroll Powe added the game winner. Princeton is 19-20-4 against Colgate on its home ice.
Scouting the Raiders
Colgate is 3-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the league this season and enter this weekend winless in six games. All three of Colgate's win have come in non-league play as the Raiders have wins against Niagara, Bentley and Canisius. Colgate's lone league point came in a 6-6 tie at Brown.
A Season Ago
Princeton and Colgate split their meetings in the 2005-06 season with each team winning at home. In Hamilton in December, Kyle Hagel gave Princeton a 2-0 lead early in the second period, but Colgate scored the next three goals for a 3-2 win. A month later in Princeton, the Tigers used a three-goal second to pull away and pull off a 5-3 win. Kevin Westgarth had three points in the win and Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored twice as Princeton snapped an eight-game winless streak against the Raiders.
That Weekend in January
Princeton's sweep of Colgate and Cornell last January was Princeton's first weekend sweep since the regular-season finale of the 2001-02 season when the Tigers swept Harvard and Brown. Princeton had gone 51 weekends without a sweep. The Tigers made it two sweeps in a row when they defeat St. Lawrence and Clarkson two weeks later.
Special Teams
On Saturday at Clarkson, the Tigers were held without a power-play or shorthanded goal for the first time since the season opener. In the four games in between, nine of the 13 goals Princeton scored have came on special teams. The Tigers had seven power-play goals and two shorthanded goals in that span.
Winning Where it is Tough
Princeton picked up its first win of the 2006-07 season last Saturday afternoon at Clarkson. Princeton's 3-2 win came in a building, Cheel Arena, where Princeton had only won once before and in a town, Potsdam, N.Y., where Princeton had only won twice before. Princeton is 3-33 all-time at Clarkson.
Streaks
Three Tigers carry point-scoring streaks into this weekend. Lee Jubinville has five points (3G,2A) in his last four games, while Mark Magnowski and Darroll Powe each have three points (1G,2A) in their last two games.
Weekly Honor
Mark Magnowski earned his second ECACHL Honor Roll recognition of the season after his three-point weekend at St. Lawrence and Clarkson. It was his second three-point weekend of the season.
Shorthanded Goals
Darroll Powe's shorthanded goal at St. Lawrence marked the second-straight game that Princeton scored shorthanded after Lee Jubinville did the trick at Union. Princeton had gone 49 games since its last shorthander, which came on Jan. 4, 2005 against American International and was scored by Powe.
Perfect Timing
Tyler Beachell, skating in his third game for the Tigers, picked the perfect time to score his first career goal, as it turned out to be the game winner on Saturday at Clarkson.
Immediate Impact
Princeton's freshman class has had an immediate impact. Mark Magnowski is tied for the team lead in points, Magnowski, Dan Bartlett and Cam French have all recorded multiple-point games. Brad Schroeder and Tyler Beachell have each scored goals, and Jody Pederson has had assists in half of Princeton's games. Zane Kalemba backstopped Princeton to its first win of the season.
First Win
Zane Kalemba picked up the first win of his collegiate career on Saturday at Clarkson as he made 17 saves in a 3-2 win. He made a career-high 34 saves the night before at St. Lawrence.
Around the ECACHL
In addition to Princeton and Quinnipiac hosting Cornell and Colgate this weekend, Harvard and Dartmouth host Yale and Brown. In non-league action, Clarkson visits St. Cloud State for two games, while Rensselaer hosts Sacred Heart on Friday.
Polling Station
Princeton was picked to finish 10th by both the coaches and the media in the ECACHL preseason polls for the second straight season. The Tigers finished ninth in the ECAC Hockey League standings a season ago. Colgate was picked to finish first in both polls, while Cornell was fourth among both the coaches and the media.
On the Horizon
Princeton returns to the road next weekend to visit Ivy rivals Dartmouth and Harvard. Princeton is back at Baker Rink in three weekends when it hosts Union and Rensselaer on Dec. 8 and 9.
