STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Princeton men's fencing team opened its 2006-07 season Sunday at Penn State's Garret Open, an individual event.
Senior Alejandro Bras (10th), freshman Clayton Flanders (15th), junior Douglas Hohensee (33rd) and senior John-Paul Mitchell (42nd) competed in the foil. Bras' finish moved him into a finals bracket, where he dropped his first-round match to Mark Kubik of Notre Dame, 15-6. Flanders met the same fate, falling to Ellis Boaz of Ohio State, 15-9. Mitchell competed in the consolation bracket, where he knocked off North Carolina's Caleb Paidue 15-5, Drew's Scott Brandsdorfer 15-4 and Yale's Kawing Cho 15-9 before losing to Cleveland State's Mike Merker 15-14 in the consolation final.
Sophomore Max Peck (15th), senior Gregory Haislip (45th) and sophomore Noah Arjomand (55th) competed in the epee, with Peck dropping his first-round finals match to Marek Petraszek of Wayne State, 15-12. Arjomand won his first consolation match against Rutgers' Kah-Lai Fong 15-11 before losing to North Carolina's Mike Burkhart 9-8. Haislip won his first two consolation matches over NYU's Matt Frenkel 15-13 and the Violets' Brandon Traverni 15-5 before falling to eventual consolation winner Christian Rivera of Ohio State 15-13.
In the sabre, Princeton's top finish came from rookie Paul Boswell (21st), with fellow freshmen Thomas Abend (22nd) and Gregory Hohensee (27th), junior John Winnerman (32nd), junior David Leffler (38th), freshman Steven Liss (42nd) and senior Eric Besson (52nd) also competing. The consolation draw was not competed to completion, but Besson (15-14 over Cornell's Brian Liu) and Leffler (15-14 over Drew's Terry Cheswick) won the only Princeton matches contested in that bracket.
The Tigers will resume their season Dec. 2 at NYU in a dual meet.
