HANOVER, N.H. - The Princeton men's hockey team pushed Dartmouth to overtime, but a goal with 1:02 left in the extra session lifted the Big Green to a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Arena. Junior Christian Read scored his first career goal in the loss.
The Tigers got off to a slow start and Dartmouth took advantage, outshooting Princeton 13-1 in the opening period. Despite the heavy edge for the Big Green though, the Tigers were a few minutes away from leaving the first period scoreless.
That however, did not happen, as Dartmouth's leading scorer David Jones received a pass from Mike Ouelette in the neutral zone and went in two-on-one into the Tiger end. After faking a pass he chose to shoot and beat Princeton senior netminder Eric Leroux high on the glove side.
Princeton's play improved in the second as the Tigers managed nine shots on goal to Dartmouth's eight. But both goaltenders were equal to the task and the score remained 1-0 in Dartmouth's favor after two periods.
Princeton continued to improve its play through the game and evened the score when junior Christian Read notched his first career goal at 4:58 of the third period. Junior Brett Westgarth collected a Dartmouth clearing attempt at the blue line and threw the puck towards the net where Read redirected it by Dartmouth netminder Mike Devine to even the score. That was all the scoring for regulation as Princeton outshot Dartmouth 10-7 in the final frame.
The game opened up in the final five minutes and was more wide-open as play went into overtime. Each team managed two shots in the extra frame but Dartmouth's second ended the period as Tanner Glass scored from the doorstep at 3:58 to win the game. Mike Ouelette kept the puck in at the blueline and quickly fed it low to Jones. Dartmouth had numbers low and Jones slid the puck through the slot where Glass scored. Leroux finished the night with 28 saves while Devine made 21 for Dartmouth.
The loss drops Princeton to 9-15-1 overall and 6-11-1 in the ECAC Hockey League. The game also dropped Princeton's overtime record to 0-3-1 this season.
