PROVIDENCE - Junior Kevin Westgarth scored twice and senior Mark Masters notched his first goal of the season as the Princeton men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Brown on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The game was Princeton's fifth-straight overtime contest.
Princeton is now 9-12-3 overall and 6-12-3 in league play with the tie. Brown is 3-18-7 overall and 2-14-5 in the ECACHL.
Brown took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Sean Hurley notched his sixth goal of the season on the power play. After a Brown dump-in, Hurley intercepted a Princeton clearing attempt and quickly shot to give his team a 1-0 lead at 11:34 of the first period. The goal, which banked in off the far post, was assisted by Jeff Prough.
Brown took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission and appeared to have made the game 2-0 midway through the second when Brian McNary's shorthanded shot hit the crossbar. The goal light went on, but the referee immediately pointed to the goal judge and the two discussed the play before the goal was disallowed.
The Bears sat on the 1-0 lead throughout the second period and appeared content to take a 1-0 lead into the lockerroom and were 6.2 seconds away from doing so, but a late Tiger goal knotted the score through two periods.
After blocking a shot in the defensive zone, senior Brian Carthas began the play into the Brown end. He carried the puck low and eventually laid the puck into the crease area where Westgarth redirected by Brown netminder Adam D'Alba for his eighth goal of the season.
After just two goals were scored in the first two periods, the teams opened up and scored four goals in the third period. Brown struck early when Eric Slais scored on the power play at 2:40 of the period from Brian McNary and Hurley. Princeton answered back with a power-play goal of its own at the 6:08 mark of the third period. Junior Grant Goecker-Zoeller and freshman Lee Jubinville worked the puck low before Goeckner-Zoeller fed it out front for Westgarth whose quick shot squeezed by D'Alba and knotted the game at 2-2.
Princeton continued to press on the ensuing rush and a backhander by senior Mark Masters gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead 33 seconds later. Junior Chrisitan Read worked the puck to Masters who fed sophomore Landis Stankievech. Stankievech gave the puck back to Masters who waited for traffic to converge on D'Alba and rand a shot off the far post and into the goal for his first goal of the season.
Princeton's lead lasted six minutes before Brown's Matt Vokes knocked down an errant shot and shot it in at 13:26 to know the game where it ended, tied at 3-3. Antonin Roux assisted on the goal.
Princeton had the only three shots in overtime, but both teams threatened and neither scored as the game ended as a 3-3 final.
Princeton senior goaltender Eric Leroux ended the game with 27 saves while D'Alba made 33 in the Brown net.
Princeton completes the regular season tomorrow night at Yale.
