PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Tommi Hurme made it back-to-back gold medals in the epee at the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championships held Saturday and Sunday at Penn's Weightman Hall. Overall, the Tigers finished fourth of 11 schools in the three-weapon standings. Harvard, Penn and Columbia represented the top three.
Hurme had to defeat one of his Princeton teammates, Max Peck, in the first round, moving past the fellow Tiger 15-12. A couple of Harvard competitors, Julian Rose and Benji Ungar, were up next. Hurme excused both 15-11 before earning his second gold medal in as many seasons with a 15-4 win over Penn's Ben Wieder.
The gold medal win placed Hurme second in the "A" epee flight by touch differential, just behind Yale's Mike Pearce. In the "B" flight, Noah Arjomand finished eighth and Fenil Ghodadra 12th. In the "C" flight, Peck took second. As a team, Princeton finished second in the epee standings.
Douglas Hohensee finished fourth in the top foil flight with Alexander Vandenberg-Rodes taking fifth in the "B" flight and John-Paul Mitchell third in the "C" flight. The Tigers took fifth overall in the foil. In the saber, Owen Cornwall finished sixth in the "A" flight, matching Jonathan Winnerman's finish in the "B" flight. Two Tigers placed in the "C" flight standings, with Robert Brenner taking sixth and David Leffler 12th. Princeton finished fifth overall in the saber.
A select few Tigers will compete in the NCAA Regional tournament to be held Saturday at Duke in Durham, N.C. Those entrants will be announced later in the week.
