PRINCETON - Ellen Gray, Lisa Hamming, Charlotte Jones and Brett Shiflett each won individual events for the Princeton women's swimming and diving team this weekend, but it wasn't enough to lead the Tigers to an overall win at the annual H-Y-P meet in Cambridge this past weekend. Princeton split the meet, topping Yale 231-88, but fell to Harvard 203-116.
Harvard took control of the meet in the first session, although it was Princeton who took two of the first three events. The Crimson won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.03, but Gray followed that up by winning the 1000 free in 10:01.68, and Shiflett followed with a win in the 200 free in 1:51.54.
That was the point that Harvard assumed full control of the meet, taking the next 11 events. Several Tigers finished second and third, which helped them build a comfortable edge over Yale. Hamming placed second in the 400 IM (4:23.34), and Chrissy Macaulay and Sobenna George finished 2-3 in the 50 free (24.05 and 24.10). Michelle Demond placed second in the 1-meter diving (263.35), a feat she would later duplicate.
Her next second-place finish came in the 3-meter competition, where she fell to only teammate Jones, who won with 302.45 points. DeMond scored 292.15 points, making it a very strong showing for the diving corps. Hamming won Princeton's final event, the 200 IM, in 2:05.41. She also anchored the 400 free relay team, which included Shiflett, Justina DiFazio and Kristen Arey, and placed second in 3:29.54.
Princeton will honor its Class of 2006 Friday night in its final home dual meet against Columbia.
