The Princeton women's lacrosse team is ranked third in the first Bounce Entertainment/Inside Lacrosse Division I Women's Media Poll released Monday.
The Tigers, who finished 13-5 a year ago, earned 270 points in a vote of 16 media members. Princeton has been the No. 1-ranked team in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, and the STX/USILA Coaches' Poll, at some point in each of the last four seasons.
Defending national champion Northwestern earned 14 of the 16 first-place votes and the top spot in the preseason poll. Duke earned the remaining two first-place votes and the second spot in the poll.
After Princeton, Maryland (250) and North Carolina (241) rounded out the top five spots.
Princeton plays eight of the top 12 teams in the preseason poll during the 2006 regular season--Duke (2), Maryland (5), Dartmouth (6), Virginia (7), Johns Hopkins (9), Penn State (10), Georgetown (11) and Loyola (12).
The Tigers reached the NCAA tournament for the eighth straight season a year ago before falling to the eventual national champions in the quarterfinals. Princeton, the 2003, 2002 and 1994 NCAA champions, has reached the national semifinals 10 times in the past 14 years.
Princeton opens the 2006 season March 4 at No. 9 Johns Hopkins. The game will be televised live by ESPNU as part of a men's-women's doubleheader between the Tigers and the Blue Jays.
