The Princeton women's lacrosse team plays its fourth game against a Top-15 ranked team in its first four games this season when the No. 4 Tigers visit 14th-ranked Penn State Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. game. The game will be played inside at Penn State's Holuba Hall.
Princeton (1-2) last played Sunday afternoon, when it fell to No. 2 Duke by a 13-11 score at Princeton Stadium. The Nittany Lions (3-2) were ranked No. 7 last week but lost games to Virginia and William & Mary to fall out of the top 10.
The Tigers, starting four freshmen as well as several other players who saw limited action a year ago, have fallen victim to a pair of spurts in their first three games. Besides a five-goal, five-minute spurt by Duke Sunday and a five-goal spurt early in the game at Johns Hopkins, Princeton has outscored its opponents 30-18 in the other 159 minutes.
Penn State defeated the Tigers in overtime last season at Class of 1952 Stadium, ending a 20-game home winning streak for the Tigers. But Princeton has dominated the series otherwise in recent years, winning the five previous meetings to that.
Junior Kathleen Miller leads Princeton with eight points this season, while sophomore Katie Atkins is second on the team after exploding for seven points (two goals, five assists) in the last two games. Atkins, who missed all of last season due to injury, had three assists in her first career game March 8 at Loyola.
Sophomore Meg Murray had 11 saves for Princeton in its loss to Duke Sunday. Murray has started the last two games in goal for Princeton after junior Colleen O'Boyle started the opener at Johns Hopkins. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Tigers after the visit to Penn State. Princeton visits top 10 foe Georgetown next Wednesday in a game that will be televised by CSTV, then hosts Virginia next Saturday at Class of 1952 Stadium.
