Final Stats
Joe Mascaretti won 14 of 17 face-offs and No. 9 Hofstra dominated possession throughout en route a 9-5 win over No. 6 Princeton in front of 1,325 at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Hofstra had 18 more shots and 19 more groundballs than Princeton while winning its fourth straight game after an opening loss. Princeton fell to 2-2.
"You have to get possession," said Princeton head coach Bill Tierney. "You can't play defense for as long as we did, especially against a really good team like Hofstra."
Princeton had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before the Pride turned the game around during the second quarter. Princeton freshman Josh Lesko scored his third goal of the season 4:47 into the second quarter, but the Pride would then score seven of the next eight of the game.
It would be 4-3 Hofstra at intermission after goals by Mike Unterstein and John Keysor, and it didn't get any better for the Tigers after that. In fact, Hofstra would have possession for the first 6:01 of the third quarter, and the lead grew to 5-3 on Chris Unterstein's goal.
Scott Sowanick then got one back for Princeton, but the Pride broke it open with four straight goals.
Hofstra would outshoot Princeton 37-19 and roll up a 33-14 edge in ground balls.
Mascaretti won the first six face-offs of the day, and Hofstra would win 14 of 18 as a team. Keysor and Athan Iannucci had two goals each for the Pride, while five different Princeton players - Lesko, Sowanick, Peter Trombino, Mac Bryson and Jim O'Brien - had one goal each. Alex Hewit made 13 saves for Princeton, while Matt Southard made six for the Pride.
Princeton plays twice next weekend, hosting Butler Friday night and Binghmaton Sunday afternoon. Bellarmine will also be at Class of 1952 Stadium next weekend, playing Binghamton Friday and Butler Sunday.
