ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore Ellen Gray was a major part of Princeton's surprising win at the Ivy League Championship meet this season. Freshman Peggy Kearns showed poise beyond her years in winning the NCAA Zone 'A' regional the next weekend. Both made their final performances of the 2005-06 season successful ones at the NCAA Championships.
Gray, a double winner at the Ivy championships, reached the NCAAs in the 1650 free. Coming in with the 30th best time in the nation, she moved up and placed 26th overall with a time of 16:35.39.
Later in the third session, Kearns placed 20th overall in the platform competition with 209.75 points. A day earlier, she finished 40th overall in the three-meter competition with 189.90 points. Kearns is part of an impressive young corps of women's divers who were another key factor in bringing the Ivy title back to Princeton for the sixth time in seven years.
"It was a great job by both women," head coach Susan Teeter said.
The Auburn Tigers won the NCAA title by three points over Georgia. It was the second-closest finish in the history of the championship.
