HOUSTON, Texas - Senior fencer Ben Solomon earned a third-place finish in the epee at the NCAA Championships on Sunday in Houston, Texas, qualifying for the four-man single-elimination tournament that would decide the national champion. In the semifinals of the draw, Solomon fell to Ohio State's Denis Tolkachev, 15-9, before defeating Martin Lee of Stanford, 15-8. It is his third All-America honor.
Solomon finished the round-robin competition against the other 23 national championship qualifiers as one of four fencers with 18 wins against the field, earning him a place in the four-man draw. He was one of three Princeton fencers to compete on Sunday as sophomore Tommi Hurme finished 15th in the epee and sophomore Douglas Hohensee finished 12th in the foil. It was the first national championship appearance for each.
In the team standings, which combines the individual bout win totals for each school's men's and women's teams, the Tigers finished eighth of 29 teams with 76 wins.
