Tyler Leachman and Blair Weymouth each scored four times and Virginia held Princeton without a goal for the game's final 32 minutes as the Cavaliers defeated the Tigers, 16-3, in a women's lacrosse game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon.
No. 7 Virginia (8-2) led just 5-3 after Alex Gangler scored for Princeton (2-4) with 1:44 left in the first half but then scored the game's final 11 goals, including all 10 goals that were scored in the second half. Weymouth's fourth goal, an unassisted drive with 11:09 left, put the Cavaliers ahead by double digits at 13-3.
Leachman scored all four of her goals in the second half for Virginia, which defeated Princeton for a third straight time and by the largest margin ever in a series now tied at 11 apiece.
"We hadn't had great practices the last two days and I think it showed today," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "Virginia is a great team and they were really good today. They read things well offensively and read the things we were doing offensively when they were on defense."
Sixth-ranked Princeton also lost its leading goal scorer, freshman Kristin Schwab, who went down with a knee injury midway through the first half and did not return. Schwab entered the game with a team-high 13 goals.
Virginia, which had led 5-1 after Kate Breslin's goal concluded a four-goal run with 13:45 left in the first half, regained momentum when Weymouth scored in the half's final minute to make it 6-3 and then exploded after that. Megan O'Malley scored 30 seconds into the second half to give the Cavaliers a 7-3 lead, and two goals in a two-minute span by Leachman a few minutes later made it 9-3. Leachman would then score again twice in a two-minute span midway through the half to make it 12-3. The Cavaliers outshot the Tigers 32-16, including 20-9 in the second half, and had 25 ground balls to just 17 for Princeton. The Tigers, who never led, also won just eight of the game's 21 draw controls.
"We didn't get a lot of shots, and then we didn't take advantage of the ones that were good opportunities early in the game," said Sailer. "We felt fortunate to be as close as we were at halftime, but it wasn't really a good indication of how we were playing."
Jamie Sundheim had a goal and an assist for Princeton, while Kathleen Miller had two assists for the Tigers. Colleen O'Boyle, who came in for starting goalie Meg Murray midway through the first half, had seven saves for Princeton.
O'Malley and Breslin each added two goals for Virginia, while Leachman added two assists to her four goals. The Cavaliers won for the sixth time in their last seven games.
