Final Stats
The Princeton men's lacrosse team scored its first goal 52 seconds into its game Sunday afternoon against No. 16 Binghamton and then did not score again for more than 22 minutes. With the way Dan Cocoziello and the defense were playing, there was no hurry.
Cocoziello led a defense that limited Binghamton to 20 shots and added an assist of his own, and the offense opened up in the second half during a 10-2 win over the Bearcats in front of 1,117 at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The win capped a weekend sweep for the ninth-ranked Tigers, who defeated Butler 9-4 Friday night. Butler defeated Bellarmine 8-7 in three overtimes i the opening of the Sunday doubleheader at Class of 1952.
Princeton, 4-2, opens its Ivy League schedule Saturday, also at home, against Yale.
Freshman Mark Kovler opened the scoring less than a minute into the game, as Princeton scored in the first minute for the third time in six games and in the first five minutes for the sixth time in six games. The Tigers took nine more shots in the first quarter, seven of which missed the net, and Binghamton tied it on Chris Mulheron's goal with 3:39 to play in the first.
Scott Sowanick, who would finish with three goals and two assists, scored the only two goals in the second quarter as the Tigers made it 3-1 at intermission.
Princeton then broke the game open in the second half, building the lead to 10-1 before the Bearcats scored with 20 seconds to play.
Kovler had two goals for Princeton, giving him at least one point in each game and a team-best nine goals through six games. Peter Trombino, who has scored at least one point in every game of his three-year career, added a goal and assist, while Tommy Davis had a pair of goals and Mac Bryson had a pair of assists. Alex Hewit made six saves while allowing one goal in 51 minutes. Princeton outshot the visitors 47-20 and had a 45-21 edge in ground balls.
