POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Princeton men's hockey fell behind early and was unable to draw even as it was shut out 5-0 by Clarkson on Saturday night at Cheel Arena. The loss ended the season for Princeton as Clarkson won the best-of-three series 2-0.
Princeton fell behind early when David Cayer gave Clarkson a 1-0 lead at 8:55 of the first period. Nick Dodge started the play by working the puck to the net. The puck bounced around the crease and over the out-stretched arm of Princeton netminder Eric Leroux before Cayer collected it and lifted it into the net for the goal.
Clarkson extended its lead with three second-period goals. It used two goals in a span of 1:50 to pull away and take a 3-0 lead. Chris D'Alivse made it 2-0 at 7:35 when he redirected a pass from Shawn Weller in for a power-play goal, and then Mike Sullivan scored his third goal of the series on a shot through a screen to make the score 3-0. D'Alvise made it 4-0 when he scored his second goal of the night at 16:19 while the teams skated four aside.
Clarkson's Mike Willemsen completed the scoring with a goal in the third period.
Princeton was outshot 37-20 in the game and was shut out for only the second time this season.
Leroux finished his night with 32 saves in the loss while Clarkson netminder David Leggio made 20 saves for the shutout.
Princeton completes its season at 10-18-3 overall, two wins ahead of last season. Princeton has added to its win total in each of the past three seasons.
