Baltimore, Md. - Mary Key scored three goals, including the first of the day and later the eventual game-winner, to lead Johns Hopkins to an 8-7 win over Princeton in women's lacrosse Saturday.
Princeton trailed 5-0 after 20 minutes before rallying to cut it to a one-goal deficit with 4:25 to go on an Olachi Opara goal before Hopkins was able to hold on.
Princeton had freshmen score five of its seven goals, and five freshmen played together for much of the game.
"It's going to take us awhile to get used to each other and to this level of play," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "I don't know if I've ever had this many freshmen playing together, but I thought they did very well for their first game."
Hopkins, who had already defeated George Washington to open the season, used Key's goal 2:12 into the game to take a lead it would never give away. It was 5-0 before freshmen Katie Cox and Kristin Schwab scored to make it 5-2 at intermission, and Hopkins maintained at least a two-goal edge until Oara scored with 4:25 to go.
Princeton had three chances with the ball after that goal, but the Tigers could not get a shot off for a chance to tie. A turnover with 40 seconds remaining gave the ball back to the Blue Jays for the last time, and they were able to clear the ball and run out all but the final five seconds, by which time it was too late for Princeton to get the ball upfield.
"I thought they played very good team offense," said Princeton defender Lauren Vance. "I thought our defense adjusted to them well. It seemed like they had the ball the whole time. We have to move forward from here."
