Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Lauren Vance scored her only career goal last season in a big Princeton win over Delaware. Tuesday against the Blue Hens, her first career assist was the final salvo in another great Princeton second half and an important Princeton victory.
Vance assisted on a Katie Atkins' goal in transition with six minutes left that finished a five-goal Princeton run, helping the Tigers defeat the Blue Hens 14-9 in a women's lacrosse game played at Class of 1952 Stadium.
"I was able to find some space in transition in the second half," said Vance, who usually doesn't spend much time in the opponent's offensive zone. "Katie was wide open and all I had to do was find her."
The win, Princeton's 17th straight over Delaware, was a showcase not just for Vance but also for her team's other established stars. Katie Lewis-Lamonica had a season-high five goals, four in the first half, while Kathleen Miller had three goals and four assists for a career-best seven points.
The No. 14 Tigers (9-5) also got a strong game from junior goalie Colleen O'Boyle, who had a career-high 12 saves and held Delaware (5-12) to just two goals in the second half.
"We had a lot of people help today on both ends of the field," said Princeton coach Chris Sailer. "It was a tough game but we really played well in the second half." Princeton again dominated the second half after a high-scoring first half that saw the Tigers head to the locker room with an 8-7 lead. Delaware scored 2:10 in to make it 9-8 Princeton but wouldn't score again until five minutes remained.
In the meantime, the Tigers began their five-goal run when Ashley Amo scored in front with 21:38 left. Miller's free-position goal with 17:21 left made it 11-8, and goals from Lewis-Lamonica and Christine Casaceli in a two-minute span gave Princeton a 13-8 lead.
Princeton outshot Delaware 20-13 in the second half and 38-29 for the game. The Tigers also won 16 of the game's 25 draw controls.
Megan Hager led the Blue Hens with four goals. Delaware has not beaten Princeton since the 1989 season.
The first half was a seesaw affair that saw Princeton appear to take control late, only to have the Blue Hens make it a one-goal game again at halftime. Lewis-Lamonica's unassisted goal with 5:33 left made it 8-5 Princeton, but goals by Delaware's Amanda Lahiff and Hager after that made it 8-7 at halftime.
Delaware goalie Jessica Cerveny left the cage after allowing eight goals in the first 25 minutes. Backup Suzy Herlihy made six saves the rest of the game.
Princeton plays at Brown Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) in its Ivy League finale. A win gives Princeton the league's automatic NCAA tournament bid and at least a share of the Ivy championship.
