The Princeton women's lacrosse team begins an important four-game stretch against Ivy League competition Saturday when Yale visits Class of 1952 Stadium for a 2 p.m. game (internet broadcast at GoPrincetonTigers.com).
The No. 8 Tigers (5-4, 2-0), who have won three straight, and Harvard are the only remaining Ivy teams that enter Saturday without a league loss. Princeton plays at Harvard next weekend and then hosts Penn and Dartmouth at Class of 1952 Stadium the following week.
Three saves by sophomore goalie Meg Murray in the final minute, including one on a free-position shot with five seconds left, preserved Princeton's 10-9 win over Temple in Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Holly McGarvie's four goals in that game gave her 10 in her last three games, while senior Jamie Sundheim also had four goals after entering the game with six career goals.
Princeton's defense has been stellar in the second half in its last two games, wins over Cornell and Temple. The Tigers have allowed just four combined goals in the second half of those games after each game was tied at halftime.
Yale (6-5, 1-2 Ivy) moved back above .500 with a 12-3 win against Holy Cross Wednesday. The Bulldogs' Ivy League win this season was a 6-5 win over 2005 league champion Dartmouth in Hanover two weeks ago. Princeton has defeated Yale 13 times in the last 14 meetings and hasn't lost to the Bulldogs at home since 1988. Yale is the only Ivy League team other than Dartmouth to have defeated Princeton in the last 13 seasons (a 2003 win in New Haven).
Today's Note of the Day
Opportunity Knocks -- Princeton has been outshot 62-39 in its last two games but outscored Cornell and Temple 20-15 on the way to wins in each of those games.
