Men's Lightweights Enjoy Strong Afternoon, Including Freshman Win, At Easterns

WORCESTER, Mass. - A disappointing morning for the Princeton men's lightweights gave way to an exciting afternoon, as the Tigers won two of four races at the Eastern Sprints. The varsity eight rebounded to win the petite final, while the novice eight raced ahead of a strong grand final field to claim the team's lone gold medal.
The first varsity boat had to overcome a tough semifinal outcome, as the difference between a spot in the grand final and the petite final was minimal. Cornell won the heat, while Harvard took second in 6:09.077, while Navy placed third in 6:09.257. The top three in each heat make the final, so Princeton moved into the petite final by finishing in 6:09.855. The Tigers showed terrific resolve by winning the petite final by more than four seconds.
Princeton got its lone gold medal from its novice eight, which entered as the fourth seed but left as the champion. Princeton won the gold in 6:18.56, while Navy was the only other boat within eight seconds of the Tigers. Navy placed second in 6:22.26.
Princeton got a fifth-place finish from the second varsity (6:31.40) and a third-place finish from the third varsity (6:53.80).
Princeton's final weekend of competition will come during the first weekend of June, when the Tigers head to Cooper River in Camden, N.J., for the IRA national championships.
