September 12, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Samson Malijani and Donny Mayard each scored their first goals of the season in a five-minute span midway through the first half to lead 17th-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson to a 3-0 win over Princeton in a men's soccer game played at University Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
FDU (3-1-2), which handed Princeton its first loss of the season, outshot the Tigers (2-1-1) 8-2 in the decisive first half, taking the lead in the 24th minute on Malijani's goal. He took a pass from the right side from Pino Tubito and dribbled into the box, where he sent a shot into the lower right corner of the net to give the Knights the lead.
The Knights added insurance five minutes later, in the 29th minute, when Mayard headed in another Tubito pass for a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers pressured early in the second half, getting several opportunities in a four-minute span beginning in the 57th minute. Both Jame Wunsch and Kyle McHugh had chances that went high, while FDU goalie Elvir Prasovic saved another McHugh chance that would have pulled Princeton within one goal in the 61st minute.
Fairleigh Dickinson, the top-ranked team in the North Atlantic region, added a third goal in the 67th minute. Jorge Blacido sent a pass up the middle to Malijani, who found Alejandro Bedoya for a blast into the opposite corner of the goal.
Justin Oppenheimer played the first 74:15 for Princeton in goal before giving way to sophomore Joe Walter, who played the final 15:45.
FDU had five corner kicks to Princeton's three and outshot the Tigers 11-7.
Princeton next plays Friday evening at the Penn Invitational, facing Duquesne at Penn's Rhodes Field at 5 p.m.
