Saint Joseph's Scores Late in Regulation, Gains 1-1 Tie With Princeton in Men's Soccer
September 17, 2006 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA--Saint Joseph's Michael McInaw scored on a loose ball situation after a corner kick with 5:20 left in regulation and Hawks' goalie Bryan Benedict made diving stops midway through the first overtime on shots by Princeton's Kyle McHugh and Matt Kontos as the teams played to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Penn Soccer Classic at Rhodes Field.
After McInaw's goal, each team had good opportunities to win the game in the 20 minutes of overtime. Princeton (3-1-2) had a corner kick after Benedict made a diving stop on McHugh's free kick attempt with 4:30 left in the first overtime, and the ball found the feet of Kontos, but Benedict again dove to his right to keep the game tied.
Saint Joseph's (0-6-1) had a chance early in the second overtime. Jason Lewis took a long shot that Princeton goalie Justin Oppenheimer punched high into the air, and the Hawks' Patrick Duddy had a chance at a rebound, but the Princeton goalie got to the ball first to stave off the chance.
Princeton played a dominating first half, outshooting the Hawks 11-3, and took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the game on Jame Wunsch's second goal of the weekend. The play originated with a corner kick toward the far post from Brian Brady, which was redirected back toward the field by Jason Adams. Kyle McHugh then sent a ball across the goal, where Wunsch headed it in past Benedict.
The Hawks outshot Princeton 13-8 in the second half and overtime, including 7-3 in the overtime periods. Oppenheimer had eight saves for the Tigers, including several on Saint Joseph's free kick opportunities.
Benedict made nine saves for Saint Joseph's, which ended an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season.
The Tigers play at Rutgers Wednesday night.
