Tigers Visit Loyola To Conclude Season-Opening Weekend
September 02, 2006 | Men's Soccer
The men's soccer teams from Princeton and Loyola have developed a terrific rivalry in recent years, and the series continues Sunday when the Tigers and Greyhounds meet in Baltimore at Loyola's Diane Geppi-Aikens Field at 1 p.m.
Sunday's game willl mark the eighth straight season the teams have played, and four of the games in the previous seven years have resulted in ties. The teams have met nine times overall in the last 10 seasons with Princeton holding a slight 3-2-4 advantage in those games, but Loyola's 2-1 victory at Lourie-Love Field in 2005 was the first for the Greyhounds in the series since 1996.
Each team will be looking for its first win of the season Sunday afternoon. Princeton earned a 0-0 tie against Stanford in its season opener Friday night in the rain at Lourie-Love Field, while Loyola fell to 0-2-1 after falling to Syracuse in overtime at home Friday afternoon.
Princeton's starting lineup against the Cardinal featured six players who had never started a collegiate game, including senior goalie Justin Oppenheimer, who had six saves to preserve the shutout. Sophomores Jason Adams, Brian Brady and Brad Fechter, along with standout freshmen Ben Harms and Devin Muntz, also earned their first career starts Friday.
The Tigers return home next Friday to face American at Lourie-Love Field before heading on a six-game swing away from home.
