Tigers Host Dartmouth, Celebrate 100 Years of Soccer At Princeton
September 28, 2006 | Men's Soccer
On a day where Princeton will celebrate 100 years of soccer, the men's soccer team hopes to cap off a Lourie-Love Field doubleheader with an Ivy League win against one of its oldest rivals, Dartmouth. Game time is 4 p.m.
The Princeton men began competition on Nov. 10, 1906, with a match against the Merion Cricket Club. The program's first intercollegiate match came a year later, against Columbia, and the Tigers first met Dartmouth way back in 1921, when the team was still playing a schedule mixed between collegiate opponents and local soccer clubs.
Much more recently, history has been on Dartmouth's side when the Big Green has traveled to Princeton. The Tigers haven't beaten Dartmouth at Lourie-Love Field since 1994, though the 2004 and 1996 games ended in ties.
Princeton (4-3-2, 0-1), which earned a tie with Stanford and a win over American at Lourie-Love Field early in the season, will be playing its first home game since Sept. 8. The Tigers ended a three-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory at Bucknell Wednesday night, getting the first career goal from freshman Ben Harms late in the first half.
Dartmouth (2-3-3, 0-0-1), which tied Brown in its Ivy opener last weekend, dropped an overtime decision at Fairfield on Tuesday. The Big Green has been stout defensively so far, allowing just six goals in its first eight games.
The Big Green defeated the Tigers in overtime in New Hampshire last season, getting a goal from Mike Ordoñez early in the first 10-minute period.
Saturday's celebration will include alumni soccer games beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the women's soccer matchup between Princeton and Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Following the men's game, at approximately 6:30, a reception celebrating 100 Years of Princeton Soccer will take place in Jadwin Gym. Tickets for that event, which are $50 per person or $100 per family, will be available at the "alumni booth" near the entrance gate to Lourie-Love Field.
